Do we have too much of a good thing? Yes! We often have too much information at our fingertips, but not enough time to look at it and analyze it all. What's the answer to the problem of too much information? I would say better searching techniques!
I am from Generation X. I remember the excitement when my school had ONE computer on wheels that all of the classrooms shared. We were so excited when it was our turn on the computer. I took typewriting on a typewriter, not keyboarding on a computer. I remember getting my first email address when I was in college. I was born a long time before the Google generation, and I am trying my best to keep up with it!
I am like a Google generation searcher in some ways. I too have fallen victim of searching, then skimming. If an article doesn't tell me what I need in the first few pages I move on to something else. I get squirreled by ads and by other interesting pieces of information. I spend too much time looking when I should be refining my search.
This week I have struggled with the Google Challenge, but through that struggle I learned how to refine my searches. Why haven't I paid more attention to the "advanced search" feature? Don't get me started on the Google Image search...WOW!
Who knows, by the end of this class maybe I'll be able to proudly say I'm part of the Google Generation.

I remember when we first got a computer in school, I think I was 5th grade. We had 2-3 that stayed in the media center and they had Oregon Trail on them. My goal in life was to finish my work early so that I could go play.
ReplyDeleteI had trouble with the Google challenges as well. It's difficulty to refine searches with tools that you've never really used before and didn't know (or had forgotten) existed.

ReplyDeleteDuring my school experience, we received computers around 5th grade. They came into the classrooms slowly. The library got five or six and the classrooms would get one added every so often. I can remember the excitement that we all had for our time on the computers. I can relate this to my current students. Our school district just went to a 1:1 ratio of iPads to students. The excitement that they all had when they received their iPads took me back to when we first got those computers.
ReplyDeleteI am also guilty of searching for something and choosing the first thing to pop up. I skim it and if I don't find the answer right away then I move on. I always turn to the Google search engine to find my answers. I really need to work on the types of articles and information that I trust.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure it was quite a transformation for you when switching from typewriters to keyboards. Although I have always grown up in the "Google generation," technology has still advanced so much since I was a child. I consider myself to be tech-savvy, but find myself unable to keep up with it all.
Like you, I also scan over information I research on the internet because it's all so overwhelming. I am also guilty of believing everything I read online. Since beginning my Master's program, I have gotten better at this, but I still have a long way to go!
It is challenging to keep up with technology and devices, but it is important to know what our students are doing and how we can help them. I transitioned from a school district with 4 desktop computer to 1:1 iPads and it was a big adjustment for me too.
